The Drawbacks Of Dentures And Bridges
If you’re missing multiple teeth, you may have a set of dentures or a traditional bridge to support your teeth.
Dentures can be inserted during the day to support your missing teeth and the gums which surround it. However, they must be taken out at night and cleaned regularly, or else further complications might develop, such as cavities, stomatitis and infection. Dentures also vary in their comfort and stability, and it is not uncommon for people to develop ulcers as a result.
A traditional bridge replaces a missing tooth by using support from its two neighbouring teeth. These two neighbours are reshaped to be able to support one crown each, while the missing tooth is replaced by an artificial tooth known as a pontic. The pontic is supported by an abutment and the two crowns on either side of it, creating a firm trio. While bridges are strong, the healthy bone and gum underneath it remains vulnerable to deterioration. If left unchecked, the deteriorated structures might allow the growth of bacteria, which is a risk to both the replaced tooth and its neighbors.
